It works like a mechanical clock: you have to turn a key (wind it up), and then the mechanism will sound automatically when you open the box until it runs out or the music box is closed. It lasts around 4 minutes sounding in a 40 seconds loops. Depending on the melody, the cylinder of the mechanism may have a different color than the image or may not be metallic. The operation and sound of the mechanism are not affected.
